Should we rewild Britain?

This resource highlights the arguments 'for' and 'against' rewilding using a role play debate activity.  Initially pupils are introduced to the term 'rewilding' and how it can increase biodiversity. This helps pupils understand why biodiversity is important for all living creatures including humans and how high biodiversity can help to mitigate some of the consequences of climate change. They are then asked to suggest some arguments for and against rewilding.

For the role play debate there are 10 different characters who have very different points of view about rewilding. Pupils act out these roles and record the arguments for and against rewilding. After the debate the pupils are asked to vote on whether they agree or disagree that Britain should be rewilded. An extension task offers more able pupils the ability to state and justify their choice. Some will realise that compromises need to be made to achieve a level of rewilding.

The activity includes these resources which can be found below:

  • Activity guidance for a teacher
  • Activity guidance for an Environment Agency STEM Ambassador
  • Presentation with supporting notes
  • Role play cards
  • Student worksheet - available in Word format for adaptation and pdf.

The activity enables teachers to introduce the work of the Environment Agency into their lessons and deliver elements of the national curriculum and is designed to be delivered either by a teacher or an Environment Agency STEM Ambassador (if one is available) together with a teacher.
