Energy security in Africa

The focus of these resources explores climate change and the energy security of Africa. It provides information and activities to highlight how hydro-electric-power is the sustainable way for Africa to achieve energy security in the future, but how this might be impacted by climate change. The student activities in the presentation, energy security and tree maps student activities sheets build the knowledge, skills and information needed for students to answer the question: 'To what extent are energy, food and water security under threat in the drainage basins of Africa?'

The presentation provides information for teachers with links for this topic with the various exam board specifications for A-level Geography. In addition it contains student exercises (also found in the energy security student activities sheet) to:

  • extract, compile and interpret data about temperature and precipitation
  • answer questions based on given information about: the interdependence of water, food and energy security; hydropower in Africa; climate models and irrigation.

The tree maps sheet explains how to create a tree map using Excel from some given data and then interpret that data.
