Zero days - Viruses, Bacteria, Funghi and Protists and how they spread

This resource uses the context of sports people staying healthy for as many days as possible, to look at various pathogens, how they can spread, and how their spread can be reduced.  The concept of 'zero days'  is used to explain why it is important that professional sports people do not become ill, so they can train for longer at an optimum level.

The resources cover 2 lessons. The first defines pathogens, how they spread and goes onto focus on viruses.  A class practical is included which can be used to model the spread of a virus in a population. The second lesson covers bacteria, fungi and protists.  Some of the slides in the presentation can be used as worksheets to highlight the differences between bacteria and viruses.  In addition there is a checkpoint task for students to research protists and funghi using supplied information sheets.    The resource also includes a a set of taboo key word cards that could be used as a starter or plenary.
