Skill 2.8 Watching a Film

Produced by Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme, this activity guides students through two viewings of a scientific film to help them to focus on specific areas of learning.

After an initial viewing of the film, students formulate questions that will help to enhance their understanding during a second viewing. This helps students to practice extracting key information and understanding through focussed observation.

There are three films based around materials science that are associated with the Applied Science activities. These may also be used in connection with the Physics and Chemistry materials. The three video clips are:

Becoming a Materials scientist
How and why do people become materials scientists? (6:04)

Building with Atoms
Using a 'clean room' and investigating the science of extremely small working structures (4:36)

Further videos from this series, looking at materials science, are available from the Cutting Edge Materials resource.
