Building the BIFoR FACE experiment

Learners discover the BIFoR FACE (Birmingham Institute for forest research free air carbon enrichment) experiment and the infrastructure associated with it. They are introduced to the arrays, met masts and flux tower and encouraged to think about the research questions that this experiment can answer. Learners are then challenged to engineer their own flux tower using spaghetti and marshmallows. Emphasis is placed on developing STEM skills.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify how BIFoR FACE is exploring the impact of climate change on ecosystems
  • Describe the equipment needed to collect data on carbon dioxide exchange rates between the earth and atmosphere
  • Apply knowledge gained to design and build a flux tower
