Core maths – trees for net zero
In this lesson students develop their estimation and proportional reasoning skills, developing a sense of scale of large numbers, in the context of planting trees to achieve net zero.
Students explore estimates around the numbers of trees people are planting and what this looks like in terms of land use as well as questions about companies that encourage you to offset flights by planting trees. Students will need to convert between m2 and km2, interpret data, statistics, graphs and infographics and will learn how much carbon trees sequester and how this changes during their lifecycle. They will read scales, plot and critique graphs, analyse and compare data in order to develop and present a conclusion about whether trees can be used to achieve net zero.
