Prenatal ultrasound

In this unit of work students consider the implications of prenatal ultrasound in terms of the risks of screening and the certainty of results. It also asks them to consider the ethical and moral implications of the decisions that may arise due to the results of a prenatal ultrasound and screening, and make decisions on what is the best or the right thing to do.

It is part of a series of units from 'Science Beyond the Boundaries' which can be used for interdisciplinary teaching about applications of science and is designed for use in sixth-form enrichment programmes.

This unit has 6 main phases, up to 9 hours in total.  It contains 5 activities in total and those that require specialist resources are listed below along with teacher guidance and presentation. The final activity involves a role play of mothers in different scenarios deciding whether they should have a screening test. This allows pupils to experience what influences making and justifying difficult decisions.
