Crest gold award: Quality control of mixtures

This project encourages students to make contact with a business that performs quality control analyses, such as a public analyst who tests samples for the Trading Standards Department.  Students will need to carry out both quantitative and qualitative analysis on tablets with a single active ingredient, such as aspirin, paracetamol or ferrous sulfate.  They should also devise a procedure for sampling and checking the concentration of one ingredient in a consumer product that is sold as a solution, such as citric acid in lemonade, and the amounts of main components in a heterogeneous mixture. This covers titrations, chromatography and other analytical techniques.
