Space, Sports, Sun and Safety

This resource contains eight projects:

1. Using UV sensitive beads and sun cream to investigate the effects of ultraviolet radiation.

2. The aim of this activity is to encourage the students to come up with their own investigations, to explore how exposure to UV radiation varies in different countries, how skin colour (the amount of melanin) can protect us from harmful effects, and to think about what precautions can be taken to reduce exposure to harmful UV radiation.

3. Students design their own investigations into the intensity of the Sun’s radiation in the visible and ultraviolet, and how best we, athletes and astronauts can protect our faces and eyes

4. Students start by exploring the spectrum of colours in the rainbow but then move on to think about UV, X-rays, infra-red and radio waves.

5. Encourage students to come up with their own investigations into the intensity of the Sun’s radiation and how different materials respond differently. The aim is to explore how best we, athletes and astronauts can keep our bodies at the right temperature.

6. Students are encouraged to: explore the variation in daylight hours across the Earth, in particular with latitude and time of year; explore the colour of the sky; explore the concepts of latitude and longitude.

7. Students can investigate the hours of sunshine in different parts of the world, and look at ways we can harness the energy from sunlight.

8. The aim of this activity is to give students a concept of size, distance and speed, starting with familiar surroundings, carrying out some sporting activities, relating this to faster speeds for travel (bicycles, cars, planes), then moving on to space and the ISS.

Going still further, the children can explore the size and distance of the Sun and Moon, and the Solar System.
