These 20 instant maths ideas, ideal for use as starter questions, extension question or probing questions to assess understanding, require students to explore the perimeters of rectangles which have the same area, convert between different units, investigate Pick’s theorem, explore the four colour theorem, investigate the area and perimeter of polyominoes, find the area of parallelograms and use Heron’s formula for finding the area of a triangle. The student resource sheets require students to use area dissections to demonstrate are formulae, explore the areas of different parallelograms and design a zoo.
