Symmetry

Symmetry: SMILE card 0880 is a booklet of activities starting with a number of photographs of objects that exhibit symmetry. In the first task students explore the line symmetry of different mathematical shapes by folding followed by an activity in which students make a symmetrical picture of their own by folding.

Students then make codes using mirror writing and complete drawings where one half of a symmetrical figure is given. To conclude there is an activity making ink blots and a homework task for students to collect pictures which exhibit symmetry. Throughout groups are encouraged to make a scrap book or poster containing the results of their efforts on each activity.
