Bridging Units
This resource from SMILE Mathematics provides materials for two units of work that can be used in Key Stage Two and Key Stage Three. They provide an opportunity for curriculum continuity for students transferring from primary to secondary school, although they can be used as standalone units in each phase. Each activity has been divided into three parts: an oral or mental starters, a main activity (differentiated to three levels of ability) and a plenary.
Magic bridging unit: Focuses on magic squares with six sessions for Year Six and four sessions for Year Seven.
- The Year Six sessions:
- Introduction to magic squares
- Swapping
- Symmetry in magic squares
- Exploring magic squares
- Algebra in magic squares
- Multicultural magic
The Year Seven sessions:
- Introduction to magic circles
- Exploring magic circles
- Algebra in magic circles
- Magic circles investigation
Problem solving bridging unit: Focuses on problem solving across the mathematical strands. Each section contains two sessions, one involving shape and space, and the other on logic. There are an additional four problem solving activities covering other areas of mathematics.
