Mixing Colours

This booklet is part of the ‘Innovations in Practical Work’ series published by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme (SEP). Visible light is the region of the electromagnetic spectrum with which we are most familiar. We are able to distinguish between different frequencies of light because of our perceptions of colour. The booklet looks at the scientific principles of colour technology, including computers and mobile phone displays, digital cameras, printers and printed materials. The activities include splitting and combining light, how filters work, the resolution of the human eye, how colours are created in printed materials, and mixing dyes and inks.

The Mixing Colours booklet contains an illustrated overview of the topic with suggestions for teachers on how to introduce the ideas in the classroom, plus student activity sheets and notes for teachers and technicians.
The downloadable resources include:
• Student activities: zip files containing the activity sheets in PDF and editable Word formats.
• PowerPoint presentations: these contain a complete set of the images used in the booklet and activity sheets.
• Further resources include sheets for printing and PowerPoint presentations that are required for the activities.

The ‘Innovations in Practical Work’ publications are supported by low-cost practical resources available from Mindsets:
* SEP publications and resources from Mindsets
* Practical resources for Mixing Colours
