Physical Science Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy

These resources, produced by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme in partnership with the PhySEP Project at the University of Birmingham, are aimed at Initial Teacher Training (ITT) mentors and Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs), acting as coaches to teacher colleagues. Originally published as a CD-ROM, the materials are intended to help mentors and coaches develop teachers’ knowledge, understanding and pedagogic skills in teaching and learning the physical sciences. The physical science subject knowledge addresses the requirements for students aged 11-14 and much of the core science and additional science for the 14-16 age range.

The resource contains two sets of materials:

  • Initial Teacher Training: This is designed for mentors to use in supporting science trainee teachers during school placement phases of their initial training course.
  • Advanced Skills Teacher: This is intended for ASTs, or subject leaders, to help science teacher colleagues when they are being asked to teach physical science topics where their confidence and expertise is less secure.
