SEP: Learning Skills for Science Post-16

The Learning Skills for Science (LSS) programme has been developed by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme from work done by the Weizmann Institute of Science.

The materials can be used by students who are studying post-16 level courses in chemistry, physics, biology, applied science or science in society. They aim to help students to:
* develop information literacy relating to the specific needs of learning science
* prepare for independent learning
* consider sources of information and audiences to whom information is given
* have a meaningful context for learning about specific scientific concepts.

The LSS materials enable teachers to integrate these skills into the teaching of scientific content. They provide activities to facilitate explicit guided learning opportunities that foster their development. The materials address six skill areas.

Skill area 1 - Information retrieval from books, libraries, experts and the internet
Activities: Ideas about information, using the library, editing a scientific book, using e-journals, using the internet and evaluating websites.

Skill area 2 – Listening and observing presentations and video
Activities: Skills of learning from presentations and films.

Skill area 3 – Reading scientific articles and textbooks
Activities: Assessing the usefulness of articles, browsing and scanning, re-interpreting text and identifying types of text.

Skill area 4 – Representing data using symbols, diagrams, graphs and tables
Activities: Using visual representations, learning from tables, processing data sets, presenting data and interpreting graphs.

Skill area 5 - Scientific writing of reports, case studies, papers, abstracts and bibliographies
Activities: Summarising information, structures of article, reports and papers, writing to a format and evaluating writing.

Skill area 6 - Knowledge presentation using oral presentations and posters
Activities: Making presentations, recognising and creating scientific research posters.

There are trainer development materials associated with the delivery of LSS learning activities. They can be found at: LSS Trainers' Materials.

Further information about the LSS programme is available on the LSS webpage.
