John Hanson Community School

This Teachers TV programme features John Hanson Community School in Hampshire, which used a move to a new building in 2002 to transform into a more healthy school.

Headteacher Steve Evatt explains that the old 1930's school site had "long passed it's sell by date", and that the new hi-tech building has enabled the school to pursue the National Healthy Schools Programme with vigour and in a truly holistic manner.

The school is particularly proud of the work they do to improve the social and emotional health of their students. They run many successful schemes, including a peer listening scheme and the integration of healthy food, diet and fitness into the school day. The school also promotes 'the three Rs' - rights, respect and responsibility, and was recognised by the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award in 2006.
