Design Club: Design a Helpful Mobile App

Design Club is a social enterprise set up to help children become design thinkers. We create industry-standard resources to help people run design thinking clubs and workshops for 9-13 year olds.

This set of resources contains everything you need to run a Design Club taster project: worksheets, a delivery guide and three themed project handouts. At the end of the project, children will have designed and prototyped a helpful mobile app aimed at solving one of three environmental problems.

Children can work on their own or in pairs. In addition to the worksheets and handouts, you’ll need coloured pens and pencils. Post-its are also helpful. For the prototyping stage, each child (or pair) needs access to a smartphone with Marvel App installed.

This project should take between 90 minutes and 6 hours to complete, depending on age and ability of children, whether or not they’ve done a similar activity before, and how much you want to explore each stage.

For more tips, ideas and resources, see our website: designclub.org.uk.

This set includes:

App design mini project worksheet (A4): two page worksheet for children to fill out. Takes children through five stages of a design thinking process: they'll learn how to frame a challenge, empathise with their user, brainstorm feature ideas, make a prototype and test the prototype.

App design mini project worksheet (A3): as above, but a bigger, one page, poster sized format.

Sketch your app worksheet (A4): wireframes of mobile phone screens in case children need extra screens.

App design mini project facilitator guide: notes to help you deliver the project.

App design project handout - Eat Less Meat: Livestock faming creates 7.1 gigatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year. How might we help people eat less meat?

App design project handout - Reuse or recycle things: We throw away 26 million tonnes of rubbish every year in the UK. How might we help someone to reuse or recycle?

App design project handout - Use Less Plastic: 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped in the oceans every year. How might we help someone to use less plastic?
