Indices

This resource contains two interactive excel files providing an introduction to indices, dealing with products and quotients involving indices and evaluating fractional indices (positive and negative). Each file contains the same further 16 sheets of questions which may be suitable for classroom use.

Indices: Integer
The first interactive sheet deals with the concept of indices beginning with positive powers of ten. The next sheet requires students to calculate values of powers of other bases. A separate sheet introduces negative indices and practice is provided of finding values of different bases to negative indices. Answers can be revealed and new sets of questions shown.

The final interactive sheets illustrate the rules for multiplication and division of numbers expressed in index form. Sets of questions are available to give practice at evaluating products and quotients of pairs of numbers in index form with the same base.

Indices: Fraction
This interactive file begins with sheets dealing with raising integers to positive fractional powers. The first two sheets are worked examples followed by sheets showing sets of examples for students to evaluate. Answers can be revealed. The next sheets give worked examples of indices which are negative fractions. The final interactive sheets provide practice at evaluating expressions when the indices are negative fractions. The level of difficulty is higher on later sheets culminating in raising fractions to fractional indices.
