Making Maths Real
Headteacher Maggie Hastie and her team at Weeke Primary School share their enthusiastic approach to making mathematics fun in this Teachers TV video.
A number of teachers in the school have become mathematics specialists and are mentors for other staff members in order to raise standards.
Students in Year One and Two start their lesson by singing a song before tackling number bonds, while Year Three and Four students begin their lesson with a mathematics rap in which they act out the mathematical symbols they will use later.
Year Six go on a treasure hunt to find mathematical clues hidden around the school, and a mathematics booster group provides extra tuition for some students before they join the main lessons.
Role play is used to bring mathematics to life, with scenarios such as managing a pizza restaurant and calculating bills providing students with real life mathematical experiences.
