Coastline Protection

This resource is a full investigation with additional activities using a variety of multi-sensory approaches where students are experimenting to make the best protective sea wall.

These are activities on the theme of an eroding coastline, leading students to investigate the best possible mixtures to make concrete blocks for a protective sea wall. Pictures, drama role plays and model making activities are included to set the scene with a multi-sensory approach. The materials are designed for students with a range of individual needs, who are working within levels 1-4 of the National Curriculum (England).

The activities develop investigational skills in a context that relates to rocks and weathering, connecting with topics on materials and their properties. It could be used in lessons or as a fun science club project over several weeks.

The strategies used to overcome potential barriers to learning can be applied to other practical investigations and are explained in the teacher notes. Detailed level descriptors specific to this investigation are included, providing helpful guidance for teachers.
