Animated Poem Decomposition Activity

This cross-curricular computing / ICT activity helps children to understand decomposition. They choose a poem and create an animation using Scratch; this encourages them to think deeply about the poem, and to explore the tools available. Children break the poem into pieces (decomposition), then plan the animation and execute the plan. Some previous experience of using Scratch would allow children to progress and meet their own objectives more quickly. They are encouraged to debug their solution and to share tips. Notes to support teaching, as well as ideas for assessment and differentiation, are provided. The activity is linked to several Barefoot concepts, and to the National Curriculum for computing.
