These resources, provided by The AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust, include materials produced as part of The Cambridgeshire SEN Science Project which brought together a group of special schools and developed a scheme of work and an assessment/recording framework for science. These STRATA (Science To Raise And Track Achievement) materials address the particular issues faced by the teachers of students with special needs.

The schemes of work provide a comprehensive range of activities that are both age appropriate and sufficient to meet the needs of the whole ability range for students (the schools involved included PMLD, SLD, MLD and EBD specialist environments). The units cover most of the aspects of Science One, Two, Three and Four across Key Stage One, Two and Three.

Schemes of work
These are the units that address the SLD, MLD and EBD range where students are working between levels one and four across Key Stages One, Two and Three.

Progression in skills
Included in the downloads are overall progression grids to enable teachers to see the development of skills generic to all areas of science. Many activities are included to address the issue of age appropriateness and the fact that students may revisit the topic many times.

Humans as organisms I: Parts of the body and the senses, Teeth and dental care, Human Skeleton.

Humans as organisms II: Food, exercise and staying healthy, The heart and circulation.

Plants and animals: Characteristics of living things, Variation and food chains, Microbes, Plants, Living things in their environment, Cells.

*Science 3 Materials: Grouping and classifying materials, Changing materials, Separating materials, Acids and alkalis, Rocks and weathering.

*Science 4 Physical processes: Electricity, Forces and Motion, Light, Sound, Earth and beyond.
