Placements are available with Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research, University of Birmingham supported by a £1000 ENTHUSE bursary.
The final part of the programme is a one-day professional development experience, held 4 to 6 months after your placement.
This opportunity is suitable for primary, secondary and FE teachers or those with additional responsibility for careers.
During a placement teachers will have insight into cutting edge research in the field of metabolism and endocrinology and see the latest technology platforms in action. They will meet students, scientists from different disciplines, lecturers, research support staff, clinical scientists and surgeons to talk about their work, how they collaborate across disciplines and get an overview of the job opportunities and careers paths in academia.
The scientists who work at the Institute are biologists, biochemists, chemists, statisticians and computational scientists. They will give guided tours through the laboratories (cell and tissue culture, molecular biology) and core facilities and expert staff will explain the technologies and their relevance for the work done in different research fields. Teachers can attend selected lectures and IMSR seminar series which features internal speakers and invited scientists but also other seminars at the Institute of Biomedical Research to get insight into current research beyond IMSR. You will be able to jointly develop ideas for future collaborations with university staff regarding work placements, demonstrations, mentoring and career talks. The aim is to support teachers in guiding their students’ career choices by informed advice on job and career opportunities science and medicine.
