Summary

During this 2-day course, you’ll explore how to use free and open-source software, which can be utilised for developing digital media. You’ll explore software such as Inkscape, GIMP, and Audacity, each used individually for image and sound content development. You’ll learn in-depth how to utilise the tools and techniques required to teach using these pieces of software.

The content within this course will be closely linked with the Teach Computing Curriculum. You'll explore the tools required to deliver these pieces of software as part of the Key Stage 3 units of work, expertly led by your experienced Professional Development Leader.

Who is it for?

This course is aimed at Key Stage 3 and 4 teachers, delivering computing. There is no requirement for you to be a computing specialist, the course is accessible for those teaching computing as a second subject.

What topics are covered?

01 | Inkscape – during this session you’ll explore the tools and techniques to develop good quality images using Inkscape. You’ll be guided through the tools required to deliver the curriculum, with mini projects to help build your confidence.  

02 | Audacity – this session will focus on sound editing. Audacity is a free and open-source piece of sound editing software which can be used to manipulate sound files, create and edit podcasts and more. You’ll be supported with mini projects, linked with the curriculum to build your knowledge and confidence around this software.  

03 | GIMP – during this session you’ll explore another piece of image manipulation software which is used in the Key Stage 3 Teach Computing Curriculum. You’ll learn the tools and techniques, exploring further methods of developing good quality images.  

How long is this course?

This two day course will include approx. 12 hours of CPD. As this is a residential course, meals and overnight accommodation are included for participants for the duration of the course.

By the end of this course you will:

  • Understand the tools and techniques required to develop good quality digital media
  • Explore the characteristics of successful media creation
  • Construct multiple digital media artefacts using various free and open-source software
  • Explore how free and open-source software can be used to deliver the Teach Computing Curriculum
