Health and safety for teaching practical science NY308 / A18
Effective health and safety is an integral part of planning and carrying out practical work in school, not something that is considered separately. By applying good practice in health and safety this course will enable you to meet your responsibilities for safe, exciting and well-structured practical science lessons. As well as the legal framework, you will plan and trial practical activities across the three main sciences, while looking at effective management of your teaching spaces for hands-on science.
This course will give you confidence in the lab and support you with additional training. This will include immediate remedial measures, fire safety training, effective risk assessment and other skills needed to run successful practical science lessons. You will also be able to explore a range of practical activities to put into practice your learning.
Who is it for?
Teachers who are new to science, as well as those who feel that a refresher in effective health and safety would be useful. You will be very hands-on with activities to develop your understanding of good practical science, where risk is managed proportionately.
Those teaching science who come from other disciplines will find this course invaluable in developing your teaching of safe, effective practical science.
What topics will be covered?
