Skew Lines

This problem involves using vectors to model 3D space. Two skew lines are presented and the challenge is to find the shortest distance between the lines. In addition, the problem requires determination of the co-ordinates of the points giving rise to the minimum distance.

Solving the problem gives an application of using scalar product to find a joining line perpendicular to each of the given lines. The points are now given in terms of two variables and the actual coordinates are found by solving a system of three equations in three unknowns.

In addition to the presentation and resource files, there are both spreadsheet and autograph files to support the investigation.
