Drinks Cans
Drinks cans are made by stamping out circular discs from a sheet of tin. Given the dimensions of the sheet of tin and the diameter of the circle stamped out, students are required to calculate the wastage and to investigate whether there is a more efficient method. The problem requires students to be able to calculate the area of a square, the area of a circle and simple percentages. Problem one asks students to find the thickness of one can top if it can be made from recycling the wastage from the making of one can. Activity two asks students to consider a different configuration for stamping out the tins and evaluate the percentage waste requiring the use of trigonometry. The exercise consists of related problems including consideration of three dimensional packing problems.
