Why Choose Maths?

These videos have been developed for the National HE STEM Programme project ‘becoming a STEM enthusiast’ to be used in conjunction with the activities found in this collection.

Dr Tim Jupp explains that the difference between school mathematics and university mathematics is that at university students have to formulate the problem for themselves. Professor Mitchell Berger explains how mathematics underpins other subjects, how all mathematics is built upon basic definitions and axioms and that mathematics can be applied in many other areas. Professor Peter Cox tells of what inspired him to study mathematics.

Rachel talks about the reasons she chose to study mathematics at university, what to expect when studying mathematics and gives her top tips to help students thinking of embarking upon a mathematics degree.
