Statistics: the how and the why

An introduction to statistics for sixth forms and for first-year students of science and engineering. As its title implies, it is written for those who are not content to be given a rule from which practical results can be obtained, but also want to 'know the reason why'.

The proofs give are intended to satisfy this entirely admirable curiosity, and the methods chosen are those which students at this level can most easily understand.
