Mineral resources
This resource explores different types or mineral deposits found in the Earth and focuses in particular on copper deposits called porphyry. A presentation looks at how these deposits are formed and mined. It then goes on to explain how geologists locate porphyry deposits using mapping, fieldwork, sampling, geochemistry and geophysics.
Once students understand this knowledge they have to apply it in a game where they work in groups to decide upon an area to explore for porphyry. They then compete against other teams to pull together a bid for the area they want. The winner is the team who identifies and successfully bids for the most viable and easily exploitable porphyry deposit. The students must also consider the legal, environmental, logistical and engineering issues associated with mining. The resources include all the information and resources needed.
