Averages and Range

This resource uses the real-life context of the British America’s Cup team INEOS TEAM UK.  The video shows the crucial role of data collection and analysis in developing the performance of both the boat and crew and the importance of maths in that data analysis.

Students will use data generated by the British America’s Cup team to develop their understanding of mean, median, mode and range of averages. The three differentiated worksheets, with separate answers, give students the opportunity to practice determining these values from a data set related to the context. Student worksheet 3 is a useful activity to extend more able students by trying to explain why certain trends are seen in the data. The resources can be used either in sequence or flexibly as an introduction to a topic, or for a quick activity.
