Big Schools' Birdwatch Activites

These activities, aimed at primary children, link to aspects of design and technology and literacy. Children follow recipes to make a variety of food for birds including pine cone lardy seed feeders, suet nut log and edible pictures.

This activity is part of the Big Schools’ Birdwatch pack, provided by the RSPB. This event is run annually and schools are encouraged to take part, however the activities may also be used independent of the larger survey at other times of the year.

We made 'Crumble Pastry Maggots' as suggested above with our Reception class during this year's Big Schools Birdwatch. Although we couldn't really get the mixture to form maggot shapes (and the lard was a bit smelly!) the children really enjoyed the multi-sensory activity. We then sent home little bags of our mixture for children to scatter on their gardens, which engaged many more of them in the birdwatch at home than we would have done otherwise.

(I accidentally rated this 1 star, it should be 5 stars!)
