Designing: a game of chance

This is a problem solving lesson that is designed to help students to:

  • Understand the connection between relative frequency and probability
  • Gain experience of designing and carrying out a probability experiment
  • Calculate a theoretical probability for a practical scenario

The problem is to look at a game that some students have designed for school charity event. A grid is presented, and coins are to be thrown on to the grid. If the coin lands entirely within a square then the player wins, if the coin touches any of the grid lines then the player loses. Students assess using different sizes of coin, and setting the prize money at varing amounts. The solution involves looking at the area of the squares on the grid and the areas of different coins, linking area with probability.
