Robots Are Colour Blind

NASA’s Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity were sent to the planet to investigate its geology. Accurate images of the surface were needed so that possible areas to investigate could be selected and then the rover directed towards them. The cameras on board the rovers can only record black and white images but colour filters can be used to build up a full colour image. Students can use projected images to understand how we perceive coloured objects and how using filters can affect what we see. The Beagle 2 and Mars Exploration Rover missions to Mars together with other space missions are used as examples of how colour can be used.
