Written as part of a book designed to improve and expand teachers’ knowledge of chemistry concepts in primary science, this resource contains background information about materials and their properties, looking at both physical and chemical changes. It provides information about how soap works, yoghurt production and how a blast furnace works, and includes a related challenge.

It is divided into three levels of difficulty A, B and C which correspond to a teachers’ existing knowledge:
Level A- assumes no science knowledge and is concerned with basic principles

Level B- contains more complex ideas and is aimed at those with some background in science

Level C- contains ideas to challenge all teachers

This resource could be used by Initial Teacher Educators and science co-ordinators running training sessions to increase teacher subject knowledge. It is also useful for individual teachers and may even help to answer some of the more difficult questions children may ask on the topic.
