Testing Water Hardness
In this classic experiment, from the Royal Society of Chemistry, students use soap solution to create a permanent lather, the volume of soap required can be linked to the hardness of the water. Rainwater, seawater and temporary hard water samples are used and the effect on boiling the water samples is also measured.
The resource is set out as teachers' notes followed by the students' page which presents the task to be investigated. A list of apparatus and chemicals needed for the investigation is provided, together with teaching tips.
Curriculum links include: hard water, water softener, salts.
