Signals

This resource, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), explores how communicating rapidly over long distances has changed a great deal since beacons were lit on hilltops. It introduces the science behind sound vibrations, and presents signals, transmitters and receivers in a way that students can connect with. Students create a timeline showing advances in communications before investigating the factors which affect the reliability of a 'string telephone'.

The activity is part of a full set of resources which look at Founding Communications and is supported by the videos Communications of the future and Communications for safety.
