Attitudes of Children and Parents to Key Stage Two Science Testing and Assessment

Published in 2010 by the Wellcome Trust, this report considers students’ and parents’ views of testing and assessment in science at Key Stage Two in England and Wales. The research was carried out by the School of Education at Queen’s University Belfast over a period in which the Key Stage Two science SAT was abolished. The views of nearly 1000 Year Six and Year Seven children in England and Wales and 245 parents were gathered and form the basis of the report.

The children’s survey, which formed the centrepiece of the research was devised and interpreted with the input of children aged 10 to 12 years old. It looked at six fundamental areas relating to primary science and its assessment.

These are:
*Enjoyment of science
*Thoughts on assessment
*Time spent practising on assessment
*Impact of assessment on home lives
*Views on the decision to scrap science SAT
*What they think is the best form of assessment
