Maths and Art

Curves of pursuit – This video demonstrates how to construct curves of pursuit. Beginning by drawing a square, students are taken through the required steps. The video ends by suggesting different shapes as starting points.

Sequence designs – Beginning with the sequence of square numbers, a new sequence is generated by only using the unit digits of the original number sequence. This new sequence is then used to draw patterns on squared paper. The video carefully explains all the necessary steps resulting in the completed pattern and concludes by suggesting the names of other number sequences students may use.

Random art – Dice are used to generate coordinates which are plotted on a set of simple axes. The coordinates generated are connected in order to produce a random pattern on the axes. This activity is ideal for use with students requiring practice plotting simple coordinates, for exploring the four colour theorem or can be extended to form a more challenging activity. The videos are produced by MathsMaster.org
