Angles, Courses and Bearings

From the Nuffield Foundation, the purpose of the module is to develop students’ understanding of angle by exploring rotation in practical situations and by using simple home-made equipment made from card.

The resource includes:

* Notes for the teacher including the organisation of the cards and the purpose and content of the module sections, instruments for measuring angles and an indication of concepts related to angle measurement which are left for future work

* A cards and notes: angle as rotation of shapes and fraction of a turn; use of clock face

* B cards and notes: measuring angles, key angles constructed on a paper protractor

* C cards and notes: directions on various boards (for example, Chinese chequers); compass directions and bearings

* D cards and notes: bearings and maps

* E cards and notes: clockwise and anti-clockwise rotations; classification of sizes of angles

* F cards and notes: equality of angles; angle at a point; more on naming angles

Each card has detailed ‘Notes for the teacher’ and most cards have ‘Notes for the pupil’.
