Produced by the Microbiology Society, these activities explore the microbes that cause dental plaque and tooth decay. Marvellous Microbes issue three This comic strip shows a dentist explaining how plaque forms on teeth from saliva, food and bacteria. The dentist shows how a disclosing tablet can stain the plaque so that it can be seen. This is a good way of demonstrating the importance of brushing teeth and good dental hygiene. Eggsperiment In this practical activity, children investigate the effect of acid on tooth enamel using an eggshell to model teeth. Both teeth and the eggshell are similar materials, rich in calcium. The activity is suitable as a homework task or can be carried out in class.
