Hot Chocolate

Produced by The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC), these activities help students to investigate the absorption of radiation, heat transfer and heat capacity.

Taken from a real-life scenario, the students look at the effects of different colours on the amount of heat a container absorbs. This mirrors an issue encountered by a chocolate manufacturer whose dark-coloured delivery vans absorbed heat and so affected the product being carried inside.

The activities in this resource see students:

* Formulate a hypothesis and model the problem on a small scale

* Investigate the effect of colour on absorption of radiation

* Interpret results and evaluate alternative solutions

* Recommend a suitable colour scheme and produce suitable display material
