Transforming Textiles

This Teachers TV programme is part of the series Inspirations, which documents imaginative school projects that make a difference.

The video shows how Stella O'Toole has succeeded in turning textiles into one of the most popular subjects at Heywood Community School. When Stella was employed by the schools, she was set the challenge of reviving the subject with few resources. This was made more difficult when there was a fire in her classroom causing much smoke damage and destroying resources. Undaunted, Stella succeeded in restoring the classroom and broadening the appeal of her subject to include boys as well as girls. With a materials budget of just £400, she built an extensive stock of fancy cloth by acquiring off cuts from local firms and used this to capture the imagination of the students in designing and producing their own bags.
