In this classroom management resource from Teachers TV, behaviour expert John Bailey provides support to a struggling design and technology department.

Drayton School is an improving community comprehensive on the rural outskirts of Banbury, with 18% of students achieving five A to Cs at GCSE at the time of filming. Martin Cromwell has recently been appointed as Head of Department in order to improve results.

Martin's priority has been to improve the teaching of large classes of 30 students by focusing on lesson planning and group work.

John observes a Year Seven resistant materials lesson and concludes that there is a need to develop the students' analytical skills in practical lessons, with more class discussion and idea sharing.

In his next lesson, Martin plans for more class discussion. John is encouraged to see the students starting to discuss their work informally amongst themselves.
