Learner Progression from GCSE Science to AS Physics
Produced by the Learning Skills Improvement Service, these materials help to demonstrate effective practice. This case study, by West Nottinghamshire College, looks at the theme of progression through STEM.
This project was designed to develop strategies which would help students to bridge the gap between GCSE science and AS physics. The students were provided with additional subject tutorials over a four-week period. Resources were provided to help the students acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for success. Students were encouraged to use the resources independently and to assess their own involvement in their learning.
Impact was measured by pre- and post-assessment and by comparison with a previous cohort. All the students showed improvement. Those who worked independently as well as during supervised activities showed the greatest improvement.
