Nuffield Co-ordinated Sciences – Single Science: Chemistry

The Nuffield Co-ordinated Sciences supplementary Worksheets and Teachers' guide for Chemistry enabled teachers to prepare students for separate-subject Chemistry GCSE examinations. The extra worksheets were arranged to fit in with the topics in the teaching order suggested for the main course.

There were three extension strands to make up the full subject:

(1) Chemistry in the environment Flame tests and tests for specific cations and anions compared with modem methods of analysis. The chemistry of some metal compounds and some compounds of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur. Hard water and water softening as well as the dissolving of gases in water.

The study of the extraction of elements from air, sea and rocks leading to calculations of the formulae of compounds. The work to be set in the context of environmental processes, including global warming, acid rain ,and the depletion of the ozone layer.

(2) The chemistry of food and drink Aspects of organic chemistry including the reactions of alcohols and carboxylic acids, and further examples of titrations. Oxidation and reduction in terms of electron transfer. Catalysis (including enzyme catalysis). Organic analysis and the formulae of organic compounds.

(3) Colloids and detergents Colloidal systems and their relevance in industry and agriculture, together with a study of the properties and mode of action of detergents.
