The Use of ICT in Subject Teaching: Training Needs in Design and Technology

From the Teacher Training Agency, this publication relates to the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) training available during the late 1990's and early 2000's. The publication is designed to help teachers consider their training needs and match them to the opportunities available through the NOF ICT training programme.

This booklet consists of four main sections:

Section 1: An overview of the use of ICT in teaching design and technology
This section provides an introduction to how information and communications technologies can contribute directly to students' learning in design and technology. It focuses on the key principles that underpin decisions about when, and when not, to use ICT and sets these in the context of design and technology.

Section 2: Identification of training needs
The expected outcomes of the New Opportunities Fund ICT training are set out. The commentary highlights aspects of ICT training that teachers may require.

Section 3: The use of ICT in design and technology - a case study
A case study that illustrates how one teacher, having decided on specific design and technology teaching objectives, reviewed and selected suitable information and communication technologies to meet those objectives.

Section 4: List of commonly used technologies
A brief explanation of some of the technologies referred to.
