Dissolving

This is one of the 18 Background Books published for Stage II of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book explores the chemical ideas related to solubilility and solutions. The main ideas covered are:
*what happens when a substance dissolves
*the part played by the solvent
*saturation
*solutions in the laboratory
*solvents in industry.

The book was published in 1967 and so has nothing to say about the subsequent shift away from volatile organic solvents for environmental reasons. Some of the nomenclature is out of date and the treatment of energy changes is more appropriate for a post-16 course.
