Growing Crystals

This is one of the six Background Books published for Stage I of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book concentrates on practical methods for growing crystals at school and at home. .

There are four parts to this book:
*Part 1 Growing crystals of alum
An account which distinguishes saturated and supersaturated solutions.

*Part 2 Growing crystals in the school laboratory
More detail on the methods for growing alum crystals with suggestions for growing crystals of other salts.

*Part 3 Growing crystals at home
Suggestions for growing crystals of salts using equipment available at home.

*Part 4 How it works
A very concise account, with graphs, of how solubility varies with temperature.

*Part 5 Crystals in nature
Examples of natural crystals.

The book was first published in 1968. The practical details need updating and modern health and safety checks, but can still be followed. The age of the book is shown by the use masses in ounces in Part 3 and the reference to the masses of 1d and 0.5d coins.
