Avionics Technician: Lee Betts

This STEMNET resource describes the background and career of STEM Ambassador Lee Betts, an avionics technician with the RAF. Lee describes how new recruits undertake basic training, work in a front-line squadron and then undertake further specialists training.

Lee's role involves fixing the radar, flight systems and communication systems on aircraft. He also works on other systems including sidewinder missiles and reconnaissance apparatus. He says, "It's an extremely pressurised job, but very enjoyable. Aircraft need to be ready as soon as possible, but we also have to consider the safety of both the pilots and the ground crew."

Lee has gained much experience in the field and he also trains personnel on risk management, health and safety.
